Arniston – A Favourite

The more I travel, see and experience the more favourite places I collect. Some near, some far, some dry and dusty, some luxurious and ultra spoily, some rustic and not – and one or two that make me feel happy from very deep inside. One of the “happy deep inside spots” that I can’t get enough of, is Arniston. Situated on the Cape South Coast, about 2 hours from Cape Town, the Arniston and Kassiesbaai settlements allows a true unspoilt coastal experience.

I think its the calm turquoise water and the offshore light beacon that I swim out to. The Waenhuiskrans Cave that we always visit at low tide, which involves a walk over the sand dunes and crawling through a hole in the rocks – only to discover a cave that is “big enough to turn a wagon in”, hence the name. There are sand dunes to board down, and shell middens to scour for treasures. The fishermen launch their boats twice a day and it makes me happy to watch the camaraderie they share.

There is one hotel with a health spa, a few guest houses, a small convenience store, the Kassiesbaai community run restaurant – and fabulous rental homes to be found at and

Arniston I long for you, the sound of your ocean and a hard swim to your light beacon … Soon soon!
