Constantia Uitsig, River Cafe Style!

Favourites are a thing we all have, even if we choose to deny it. Especially in the world of food and fabulous wine estates, and I’m proud to announce one of mine is and always will be Constantia Uitsig.

Recently I was invited by Fiona Oliverwho heads up their Public Relations, to enjoy lunch at the River Cafe. Fiona let me know that they had launched their new cafe-style menu, and the offer was to try it. Without hesitation I booked lunch for my son Eden and I.

To be honest though, we did more than ‘try’ it. We took on the treat and wonder of each course with the enthusiasm of a glutton, and despite the good intentions with which we’d arrived, enjoyed three courses of yum. So much for gracious modesty …

The menu is diverse and offers a selection of breakfasts between 08h30 and 11h00, followed by a delightful range of starters, mains and desserts – not to be denied. My choice of starter was the Roast Butternut Salad which is served with pear, gorgonzola and mixed leaves. What a treat of flavors. I followed this with the decadent choice of River Florentine, a potato and onion rosti with smoked salmon, spinach, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Yes – I had warned of decadence. My son enjoyed the butternut soup and beautiful Fish of the Day, more modest choices than I …

Our meal was accompanied by Constantia Brut 2008 Methode Cap Classique, crisp and refreshing. I could drink it all day but for my reputation, which would soon be lost …

Despite every effort to muster self-control, I exploited Fiona’s generosity and ordered chocolate brownies to match Eden’s Chocolate Fondant. Heaven on earth as we shared this feast of chocolate perfection.

This truly is a place for relaxed conversation and perfecting the art of lazy lunches. We sat there for three hours plus and only left when guilt set in and we felt obliged to bid farewell with thanks to our gorgeous waitress. A walk on the farm later, we managed to tear ourselves away from this magical place.

The River Cafe has numerous areas that can be booked for groups or private gatherings, including arched colorful interludes and tables outside under the dappled sun. I recommend booking to avoid disappointment, and you can do this at River Cafe 0217943010 and rivercafe@uitisg.co.za.

Don’t wait, this is a menu and place that deserves many a visit over the months to come. My recommendation is that you study the menu before arrival though, it has so many fabulous options its hard to decide on the spot. Or better still go often and try them all. Now if only this was my local …

Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to enjoy the warm treat hospitality at River Cafe, something that whole of Constantia Uitsig exudes. You may want to look at my posts on visits Constantia Uitsig Hotel and Constantia Uitsig Restaurant too. This girl has a favorite and I’m shouting it out to the world.
