Ours Is The Only National Anthem With Five Languages – Do We All Know It?

With the FIFA World Cup looming, 10 days to kick-off, we’ll be hearing many National Anthems proudly sung, and ours as hosts will dominate. Whilst at a braai on Saturday I was asked how many languages were in our anthem, and I incorrectly said four having forgotten that Verse 2 is in Sesotho. As a bid to rectify that “lack of know” I’m posting the anthem for learning … we need to know!!

Our National Anthem.

(Xhosa) Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika
Maluphakanyisw’ uphondo lwayo,
(Zulu) Yizwa imithandazo yethu,
Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo.

(Sesotho) Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,
O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho,
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso, Setjhaba sa, South Afrika – South Afrika.

(Afrikaans) Uit die blou van onse hemel,
Uit die diepte van ons see,
Oor ons ewige gebergtes,
Waar die kranse antwoord gee,

(English) Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.
