When in Prince Albert recently I visited Gay’s Dairy for a tour and tasting. Owned by passionate Gay van Hasselt, a visit is mandatory for any cheese lover. Rounds of maturing Prince Albert Royal and Parma Prince line the shelves and there is mozzarella and feta on offer for tasting.
Gay’s cheeses are produced from unpasteurised Guernsey milk, and are guaranteed to be free of hormones, antibiotics, colouring, additives and preservatives. Actually the very happy herd of cows could be seen grazing happily behind the dairy, whilst chickens wandered under foot and the biggest cat I’ve even seen lazed in the sun next to the entrance.
Gay and her team also sell milk, amasi, delicious fat free yoghurts and a selection of fruit juices. Whilst I was there numerous locals came to pick up their milk, such idyllic loveliness.
I am a great admirer of handcrafted producers, and Gay’s Dairy delighted me. I left stocked up with dairy yum for myself and family, and a promise to return soon … Tours are offered by appointment.
