So I was young once, admittedly not so long ago, and after graduating high school had the great privilege of spending a year in Israel as an American Field Scholarship (AFS) Exchange Student. The only South African to be selected I spent 1985-86 with a warm and wonderful host family in Jerusalem. This was undoubtedly an experience which much altered my life….
With Easter upon us I was thinking back to that time and the Christian High Days that I spent in the Holy Land as an 18 year old. I dug through the old dusty pics which I keep in my granny’s hat box, and found a couple which I thought I’d share.
a. Me with my Israeli host sister Sharon Weiss in Yemin Moshe, one of the West Jerusalem neighbourhoods which offers an amazing view of the Old City. From here I could look down towards the Via Dolorosa and ancient Church of the Holy Sepulcher, where Christian tradition says Jesus was crucified and buried before his resurrection on Easter Sunday.
b. A view of the Western Wall, or Wailing Wall of Jerusalem with the Dome of the Rock above it. The old city of Jerusalem holds such great religious significance for Christians, Muslims and Jews alike.
