Grootbos. – After our wonderful #GrootbosMagic weekend, we travelled into the rather undiscovered Hemel-en-Aarde valley, where high up on a ridge is a piece of paradise that combines the rich gifts of nature and unique terroir. Here the dedicated team of Creation work to create their award winning wines.
We enjoyed a Food and Wine Pairing under the guidance of Carolyn Martin, who together with winemaker husband Jean-Claude have built this dream into a sought after destination with wines of great distinction and achievement.
We were introduced to the subtle secrets of flavour and texture and how the inherent qualities of wine and food can combine to create the ultimate taste sensation. To demonstrate the huge impact that food and wine has on each other, a delicious array of canapés, each specially prepared by Creation’s talented chefs to match a specific wine, was on offer.
It’s easy to understand why this combined with the relaxed class and ambience of Creation draws people back to try the varied offerings, also what makes pre-booking essential. Here is a look at what we got to enjoy.
The winemaking team places great emphasis on working in symbiosis with Mother Nature, their sustainability and eco-practices are admirable, their philosophy and gentle considered approach to the land, admirable.
Actually, even the friendly fly-catchers that live on the orchards in the restaurant were welcome company and cute reminders of how much there is to learn and love about this estate.
Look out for their wines: White Varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay and Sémillon whilst Red Varieties are Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah and a superb Grenache. My favourites are undoubtedly the Viognier and Pinot Noir. This presentation case of their best would make an incredible gift to any fine wine lover.
Afterwards, sated and reluctant to bring closure to the magic, we lingered on the lawn with good coffee and interesting teas, a last look, chats and collective reminiscing – before heading home …
Please connect with co-owners Jean-Claude and Carolyn Martin and their fine Creation Wines team on Twitter and Facebook. Also have a look at their website Creation Wines and subscribe to their newsletter to keep in touch.
Thank you for your generosity of spirit Carolyn, no better way to end our spectacular weekend. (Top pic supplied)
Read more about my previous visits to Grootbos here, as well as on their blog where I’m a regular contributor. And make sure that you take time to enjoy Creation Wines when anywhere near the area. There’s even a kiddies pairing menu!
Actually, make a trip out to the Overberg for the express purpose, of them.
