Choosing a romantic getaway or honeymoon destination is never an easy decision to make as we are spoilt for choice as we look to options. Yet Bali, where volcanic mountain ranges meet tropical rainforests and ancient temples to create a magical environment, has become renowned for its romantic and relaxing moods and the memories created there. So, is Bali the most romantic place on earth? Looking at the following list, it just might be.
1. Sunset Dinner with your feet in the sand
Bali is home to incredible sunsets and excellent cuisine, so why not pair the two together? There are plenty of restaurants on or near the beach that offer excellent views of the sunset or sunrise, depending on what side of the island you’re on. Afterall, there’s something about a candlelit table and the sun setting on the horizon that creates the perfect mood for a romantic evening.
I remember having a dinner on the beach, with the tables placed along the shoreline and warm water gently lapping at my feet as I toasted the skies. It was incredible.
2. Beach Strolls
Going for the proverbial “long walk on the beach” really is a great way to enjoy a moment with your partner, even if no words are spoken, the simple act of holding hands and taking in the scenery speaks of the intimacy and togetherness that you’ll want to keep alive throughout your stay. Collecting shells, drawing shapes in the sand, building sea castles, chasing the gentle waves – there’s no limit to the amount of fun and silly things you can do while messing around on a white sandy beach in Bali.
3. Hiking and Kayaking in the Valley
Although the more relaxing and mellow activities are better associated with romance, sometimes getting active can throw in some much-needed adrenaline. Plus, getting good exercise during the day ensures that you’ll appreciate and enjoy the rest and relaxation in the evenings even more. Mount Batur is the perfect area for epic hikes. You might want to hike out to the famous Tegenungun Waterfall or participate in one of the many volcano trekking tours in the region. There are also some incredible waterfalls to be seen in the Munduk area, making it a leading Bali honeymoon destination.
4. Photo Shoot in the Rice Terraces
Rice paddies are uniquely majestic and need to be seen to be fully appreciated. Use them as a background for a collection of photographs, whether you hire a professional photographer or just go it alone with a good smartphone camera, using a terraced rice paddy is always a good move when in Bali. Of course, not all paddies are the same so be sure to check out the most famous ones first, namely the Tegallagang, Jatiluwih, Sidemen, Rendang, Pererenan, Pupuan, and Munduk.
5. Gourmet Picnic next to the River
There are a few white-water rivers in Bali – Melangit River in Klungkung, the Ayung River in Ubud, and the Telaga Waja River in Karangasem. However, the Ayung and Telaga Waja are the two most popular with the tourists. Regardless of which river you choose, hosting a romantic picnic on a peaceful stretch of shore is always a great complement to your trip. I did this a few years ago and the memory of the romantic reward after a day on the river is much cherished.
6. Scuba Diving
Scuba diving isn’t usually thought of as being romantic, but it does give you a great opportunity to bond with your partner and create interesting new moments as you explore the coral reefs and marine wildlife together. Often, these simple teamwork type activities like buddying up for a dive can strengthen a relationship and may even become something that you can both enjoy regularly.
7. Waterfall Exploring
Bali has enough waterfalls to keep you busy for weeks. Some of the most beautiful include Niagara Munduk in Buleleng and the Aling-Aling “slip and slide” waterfall in Sambangan. The sound and look of a waterfall with its rainbows catching the spray never fails to create a sensual and romantic mood, especially if you choose one that is relatively secluded most of the time. Some of the waterfalls are gentle and can be stood under without any problems while others are massive, roaring feats of nature. Select the kind you want to see first and plan your waterfall discovery trek around that.
Planning Ahead makes for a More Convenient Trip
While I’ve listed numerous activity options above, they don’t have to dominate your valuable downtime but can rather be scheduled across the days of your stay. To make this easier, you may want to book your honeymoon or holiday with a professional tour company that can provide a guide to ensure you get the most out of your time in Bali. That’s what I did on my trip, allowing free days for spontaneity, but knowing that some of the main attractions would not be missed. It truly is a romantic and beautiful part of our world.
