The working class neighbourhood La Boca is at the Southern tip of the city, along the Riachuelo Canal. The ‘barrio’ is famous for its houses made up of sheet iron and painted in different bright colours. The sailors who developed the area in the mid-19th century built their homes from material found in the interior of abandoned ships, using leftover different colour paint from work done in the shipyards to decorate their homes.
Today La Boca is an immense canvas of splashed colour, incredibly trendy with amazing pizzerias, side-street cafes and all-day tango clubs. Not to mention a treat of street art and graffiti … A must stop if you have any time in Buenos Aires at all. Three famous Argentines that are much loved and honoured are Carlos Gardel, Tango’s first international superstar, Evita Peron and Diego Maradona, who started his football career playing for the local La Boca club, Boca Juniors.
