London is universally known for being one of the best places to visit and beyond the many attractions, galleries, historic buildings and bridges, its theatres play host to some of the best-reviewed musicals from around the globe. Whether you’re visiting the West End, St Martin’s, The National Theatre or The Globe, there’s bound to be a performance worthy of a standing ovation. I personally love The Globe but have been moved to emotion at all these. Here is a small selection of what’s on in London’s right to help you get your theatre tickets ahead of a performance you’ll never forget.
The Book Of Mormon
Winner of four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, The Book of Mormon is considered “musical comedy heaven” though is not for the easily offended. From the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone The Book of Mormon is a satire and has been on a residency in Broadway since 2013. Currently in London’s Prince of Wales Theatre, this is one for the adults and will have you laughing all night. Location: Prince of Wales Theatre
Wicked
Celebrating 12 years in the West End the clever, Wizard of Oz themed, Wicked will transport you to a fantasy world and tells the tale of the Witches of Oz who were around long before Dorothy visited this mystical world. With fantastical special effects, stunning costumes and intricate sets this production is bound to ignite all of your senses. Location: Apollo Victoria Theatre
The Phantom of the Opera
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s infamously long-running musical, The Phantom of the Opera, is still available at the West End’s Her Majesty’s Theatre even after originally opening in 1986 where it won the Olivier Award for Best Musical. The show still uses the original set design, costumes and special effects and features some of the theatres most memorable music. One not to miss. Location: Her Majesty’s Theatre
Waitress
Having been a hit on Broadway, Waitress, has finally come to London and previewed first on the 8th of February 2019. The show tells the story of Jenna Hunterson, a waitress who is looking for a way out of an unhappy marriage and is dealt a few life surprises along the way. Described by the Express as “warm, witty, wise and hilarious” this feel-good musical is one to remember. Location: Adelphi Theatre
Les Miserables
Les Miserables is The West End’s longest-running musical and has been seen by more than a staggering 70 million people from around the globe. The musical has won many awards, most recently a BBC Radio 2 Audience Olivier Award, so don’t miss your chance to see the phenomenal original production. Location: Sondheim Theatre
The Lion King
Disney’s film classic, The Lion King, has been beautifully reimagined in this colourful musical. Take a journey across the African planes and watch as the animal kingdom comes to life through magical puppetry and song, featuring music by Elton John and Tim Rice. One that both adults and children alike will thoroughly enjoy. Location: The Lyceum Theatre
Since opening on Broadway in 1997, THE LION KING has become the most successful musical in history.
