Nelson Mandela would have been 100 years old on the 18th of July 2018, and to mark the occasion I was invited to join an intimate dinner at Reuben’s at the One&Only Cape Town. Gathering around a beautifully laid table, we were there to sample the Celebratory Centenary menu designed especially with Madiba in mind, each course offering a platform and place to remember him and celebrate his life. The Sommelier had paired wines of apt significance to the food prepared by the Chefs.

The world will never forget the contribution to South Africa and the human race at large, and will continue to honour him always, but especially over this commemorative time.

The first toast was with a glass of Graham Beck Brut – the MCC used to toast Nelson Mandela during his inauguration in 1994. Interestingly, Barack Obama celebrated his Presidential win with Graham Beck Brut NV in 2008. The three-course dinner was then paired with: Marianne Floreal – served at Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday; Rust en Vrede Shiraz – selected by Mandela for his 1993 Nobel Peace Prize dinner in Oslo; and ended off with Graham Beck Demi Sec.

The vegetarian offerings for me included an Amuse of Goats Cheesecake and baby herb salad with truffle dressing. For the starter a beautifully roasted cauliflower head with a selection of root vegetables, and for mains, mushroom risotto with a mushroom reduction that I could drink by the glass. For dessert, I opted for the creme brulee off the menu, and for the record, left an absolutely clean plate.
