Even though they’re under half an hour from where I now live, I’d never been to the Atlantic Dunes. To be fair, my little car would sink into the soft white ever-shifting sand dunes and I’d never be seen again if I ventured out there alone.
Which means that joining Ozan Emre Yerlikaya and Travel Designer in hosting a couple of charming ladies from Miami for a 4×4 drive in his Defender, followed by a delicious gourmet picnic by Jade De Waal of Food Jams, gave me a chance to have it all.

It was a chilly day, but that never stopped any of us from pausing to appreciate the splendour and scenery. We even got (pretend) lost on the way out and paused on a few of the 35m+ tallest dunes, to appreciate the views towards Table Mountain. This is an important conservation area, protecting the Atlantis Aquifer which supplies water for the Atlantis area, and I was very impressed by the substantial visitor’s centre that has opened to monitor and guide visitors to the pristine, and much loved – yet not accessible without a Defender, area. Such a fun day and our newly founded American friends were warmed to the core by the adventure – and food. Here are some pics of the day, the scenery, the food and incredible natural beauty.
